Makeup, hair and manicures are no second thoughts when A-list actresses are prepping for the red carpet. They know that every inch of their appearance is going to be scrutinized and then analyzed in photos and videos. So it’s time to bring on the glam squad, as was evident at Sunday’s Emmy Awards. And guess what? These ideas can easily be copied by the millions of us non-Hollywood types. Here are the products and techniques, shared by ABPR in New York, which reps Elizabeth Arden and L’Oreal, and Tractenberg & Co., which works with John Frieda.

1. Lip service
Fashion observers who are usually quick to criticize had nothing but praise for actress Christina Hendricks and her curve-hugging black Christian Siriano gown. The beauty and simplicity of the fashion meant the makeup “could have really gone in any direction,” said Vanessa Scali of Elizabeth Arden, but rather than going overly dramatic, she decided on “a fresh face and a warm, red lip.”
For events lasting hours — like awards shows or more typically, receptions and dinners — it’s smart to choose a long-lasting lipstick. For Hendricks, Scali used Arden’s Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick (12-hour formula) in Power Red, $25.

2. The long and short of it
Many did a double-take when seeing Claire Danes on the red carpet, because she wore her hair in a short bob rather than the long soft waves she had sported the day before. Danes demonstrated a different sort of updo, the faux bob.

Celebrity hairstylist Peter Butler chose the faux bob that helped to elongate her neck and emphasize the clean lines of her Armani Prive Gown.

To prep Danes’ hair when it was still wet, Butler used John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Formula Hair Serum and then added Frizz-Ease Curl Reviver Styling Mousse before blow-drying to give the hair more texture for better workability and hold.

Butler then drew a a low side part and used a large-barreled curling iron to curl the “Homeland” star’s hair inward. The stylist created two small pin curls at the nape of her neck and combed the top of her hair down and under, pinning as needed into the base.

Butler finished the look by tucking the hair on the left side of Danes’ head behind her ear and spritzing Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray for hold. For a little glisten under the lights, as a final touch, Butler applied a sheer coat of John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine.

3. Hand it to her
Zooey Deschanel never fails to look sleek and sophisticated at awards events, but her manicure is always a whimsical treat. L’Oréal Paris Global Nail Artist Tom Bachik carried on the tradition with a look inspired by modern geometric art that contrasted the softness of her icy blue dress, Tom created a black and white checkerboard pattern that was simple, graphic and not too literal.

Here’s how to achieve the look:
1. Apply L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in I Will! to all nails.
2. Using a striper, draw a plus sign on the nail to divide it into four quarters.
3. Apply L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in After Hours (black) to create the checkerboard pattern in a reverse pattern from finger to finger.
4: Using the back of a makeup brush for a tip, paint on tiny dots for to create the 3D textured sequin effect.
5. To complete the look, spin the brush of the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in After Hours on thumbs to create a tiny moustache.
